Book review FAQ

by Tony Cappellini last modified 2008-02-22 01:00

Q. What qualifications are required to write a review?

A. The main qualification is that you have enough free time in order to finish the review in the required time frame. The reason for this is simple. BayPIGgies has commitments to many publishers to get timely reviews back to them. To date, we have had 10 people who have received books for reviews without actually submitting a review in return. This isn't fair to the publishers nor does it reflect well on BayPIGgies.

Q. How long do I have to submit a completed review?

A.
1 Month from the time you receive the book

Q. Where will my review be published?

A.
On the BayPIGgies website under the reviews section.

Q. What should a finished review look like?

A.
Take a look here for examples of completed reviews, as well as some guidelines from O'reilly.

Q. What format should the completed review be submitted in?

A.
For now, plain text, separated into paragraphs. Please submit a file containing the review, as opposed to embedding the review in an email. Someday, if we ever get a Plone administrator for this site, we hope to add the capability for users to submit their reviews directly to this site.

Q. What happens if I cannot complete the review due to a sudden change in my schedule?

A.
Just send an email to whomever arranged to get you the review book, and we will try to find another reviewer.

Q. Is there a limit to the number of books that I can review?

A.
No. If you request multiple books, you will receive one book at a time. When you complete each review, you should arrange to have the next book mailed to you, or pick it up from the review coordinator.

Q. How should I write the review if I really do not like the book?

A.
Be fair and objective. If you don't like a section of the book or the entire book, site paragraphs and give clear examples indicating why you didn't like it.

Q. Can I post my review on other websites as well?

A.
Yes. The publishers like as much publicity as possible.
Q. Does the book being reviewed have to be about Python?

A.
No. ANY book on the publisher's website is available for review.
